My Painting #11 - Leslie Saeta's 30 Paintings in 30 Days - January 2014 Challenge

"Maria"

Here is my painting for Day #11 of Leslie Saeta's painting challenge.

I am continuing with my theme for this week  to interpret and study various paintings by Picasso.  Today I chose Picasso's painting of "Woman in Spanish Costume",  1917 Oil on canvas, 45 5/8" x 35 1/8", because of it's subtle beauty.   I think it is intriguing how this painting has the appearance of being both sketched as well as painted.  And to me she looks like a Spanish Princess.

I thought it would be fun to try this sort of style, and it was.  I wanted to make mine as gentle as possible.  I am calling my gentle princess "Maria".

Hope you enjoy today's painting.

Have a Wonderful Weekend.

Happy Painting!  Cheers!  and ... Break a Bristle.

Joan
P.S.  For the next few days, we are expecting high winds...so if I don't post for a couple days it is because we have lost our power.  It has happened several time before!  But cross your fingers that is won't this time.

  1. Great work Joan! I love the texture, and how she has a "halo", a glow around her. Very angelic. Very sweet, delicate and regal. You are so good at expressions! I am wondering what she is thinking, who she is thinking about, and why she is sitting alone. maybe she is wondering why as well. :)

    1. Thank you, Sheila. It is always so fun to read what others write in regards to what I have painted. I bet you enjoy this as well. I like your thoughts regarding what is she thinking about. She does look like she is pondering something. Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy Day #12.

Oh, it just came to me! She is sitting in a very similar pose like Jane Seymour did in "Somewhere in Time". Jane Seymour's character - Elise McKenna (my daughter's name :), was looking over at her 'love" Richard Collier (Christopher Reeves). So... that is what Maria is doing too! She is looking over at her "love". Who? That remains a mystery!

    2. P.S. My daughter's name is "McKenna"...not Elise McKenna. :) Thought I should clarify that :) and yes, I did name her this from the movie "Somewhere in Time" because...the movie was filmed on Mackinac Island, Michigan and filming was still going on while we were on the Island getting married. I even met Christopher Reeves!!! So, the name McKenna was totally fitting!! :) :)

    3. WOW Joan, that is so cool! You will have to tell me all about that meeting. I LOOOOOVE that movie. The idea of time travel, and that he found her years later...that she always waited for him..... Oh my gosh. They have it on netflix, I am going to have to watch it tonight! This does look like Jane in the movie!!!
What a cool name for your daughter! Very cool!! OK, so you need to do a vase face Jane/Elise!!
If you like that movie... have you ever seen The promise? They have that one on Netflix too. Total chick flick.... I saw that when I was a teenager, and LOVED it.
I am going back through your paintings, because I saw one I missed, the one in the middle. And now I see that, you don't have the pin it button, I could have swore I had pinned some of your work. Brain fart. ha ha ha

    1. Thank you, Sue. Well.... we did lose power last night while I was brushing my teeth! But it came back on in the morning. So far, so good.

My thoughts exactly!! No power! No problem! I will just paint/draw by candlelight or battery operated lantern :) Thanks for stopping by, Sue. SO glad you are taking "The Year of the Fairy Tale". too!!
